First Day Jitters

Tuesdays are a day to relax :) I started school yesterday on the day of the week where I have the most class. I have Anatomy and Physiology II, Microbiology and both of their labs on Monday. If that wasn't enough, I have choir rehearsal at night for 3 hours.

Here are some of the things I took from my first day (and believe me, it was a lot...Monday was like sensory overload):

I love that my classes are so diverse. My lab partner is in her 30's with two kids, and I even have a nun in one of my classes. This is definitely a change from DePauw...a positive one, even.

A lot of people attend Meramec, but it's a small world there. I saw a girl from my high school as soon as I stepped foot on campus, and I saw about half of the people that were in my summer class on that first day.

I am special/unique/different. I didn't realize until my microbiology teacher asked me so many questions about my background that it's actually a pretty unique thing that I was a music major and opera singer and now am going into nursing.

Networking is key. I'm trying to get over my qualms with it, because I think it can be misused in a way that is very fake (I know, I'm Holden) and where you're just being nice to use people.

Anyway, choir was an interesting time. It's going to be very difficult for me not to compare it to Chamber Singers, because I just loved Gabriel Crouch as a director so much. They don't warm up...I find this a little unnerving. In my college choir, we used it as a way to find our blend. They're also doing a lot of pieces they've done in the past, so I really was sight reading what people were already confident on. When pieces swell to beautiful fortissimos, this choir sounds glorious. I'm hoping later on in rehearsals, though, we can find our quieter blend. Hopefully we were all just so excited to be back that we sang as loud as we could, because there was just no dynamic contrast. I did meet some really great people, and I'm super excited to sing in the venues we're singing in this year (like the Basilica).

Tonight, I have my first orchestra rehearsal. Let's all hope that I don't get lost on the way to Flo Valley, because I'm going to be in some really rough areas that you don't really want to get lost in at night. Also, let's hope that I'm not the worst violin there, haha. I guess it don't really matter. It's all about the music for me. Ok, it's business, it's business time.

  1. HAHAHA I love the ending. It's always business time, baby ;) (too much?)

Anyway, I've always told you that you are unique and special!! You have finally realized it. I am jealous of the diversity that you have in your classes. I think I will take some classes at a community college at some point just to test it out.

I'm also glad that you finally admitted that you are Holden ;)
